Weekly Plans - Week 31 (Apr. 22-26)

It's Earth Day this Monday (April 22) and we have planned a few activities around that (see below).
Our grade 6 Learning Buddies spend time with us each week. This week we will be going outside with them on an Earth Day scavenger hunt!

Here are a few other things you may like for Earth Day!

In religion our focus is on how we can be stewards of the Earth. We will be using these cards to play a game to discuss and then we will work in groups to create posters showing how we can help our planet.

In case you missed what we did last week, here's a little recap...

Students created a variety of pictures using these metal loose parts!

We set up a "perfume making" centre where we used our dried tulips to create perfume!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

What can you build with sticks and rings?

Can you sort the garbage and recycling?

Can you tell a water story?

Can you make the Earth using loose parts?

Let's play the "Ice Cream Scoop" game!

We added bells to our Magformers at our Light Table (they are magnetic!) to see what the children come up with here!

In our fine motor small group this week, students will be using these large punches with strips of paper.

We are continuing with our math unit on subtraction.
Here are some of the lessons/activities we will be working on:

Solving subtraction sentences by filling in the missing number.

Subtraction stories.

Using our subtraction mat to help us solve equations.

Using playdough to solve subtraction equations.

To help us understand the basic concept of subtraction, students can use this flip book.

All of these activities (and lots more including what we worked on last week!) can be found in my Subtraction in Kindergarten Math Pack in my TpT store:

Our Dinosaur Inquiry is well underway! Students are beginning to research different dinosaurs in groups and this week we will be taking a virtual field trip to the Dinosaur Museum!

Weekly Plans - Week 30 (Apr. 15-19)

I truly believe that time flies to the end of the school year once we pass March Break.
I can't believe I'm typing up weekly plans for the middle of April already!
These past few weeks have been a little interrupted with Easter and then the solar eclipse which made them shorter weeks at school so you will notice we didn't change too many centres around our classroom this week.

The sensory bin was probably THE most popular centre we had!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

What can you build using metal parts?

Can you create a flower arrangement?

Can you make perfume using dried flowers?
(These are the tulips that we painted a few weeks ago!)

The last couple of weeks our focus in math was on addition and students learned how to use these addition mats to help them solve simple equations. We left them out for students to try on their own! There are pink and blue questions (more challenging!).

With our fine motor small group we will be using clothespins to pick up and sort various sizes of pom poms.

Our students love playing sight word games so I created a new one perfect for spring!

This week (and next) our focus in math is subtraction.
We will be working in small groups playing these games!

Weekly Plans - Week 29 (Apr. 8-12)

It's such an exciting week ahead as we prepare for the solar eclipse!
Monday will only be a half day (morning) for the students. We will be reading a book and watching a video to help us understand this amazing natural phenomena!
Here's a little craft we will be making this week too! Tape the circle to your black construction paper. Use oil pastels to colour around the circle and then use your fingers to smudge it!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

We added small foam blocks to our water bin along with plastic people.
Can you build a boat for the people?

What can you build using the magnetic rods?

How many bugs can you pick up before the timer runs out?

Can you create a flower using playdough and loose parts?

Let's decorate the rainbow using loose parts at our light table!

Roll and erase the numbers (using a paintbrush with water) on our Tuff Tray.

Spring coding! What stories lie here?

Our spring themed small world play.

We added our Spring Words chart to our Writing Centre.

In our weekly Writer's Workshop lessons we are learning how to take all the amazing stories we have been writing and turn them into a digital version using the My Story Book Maker app (free and paid versions available).

You can follow along with our weekly writing lessons here:

At our Science and Discovery Centre we set out a provocation all about dinosaurs!

We added felt dinosaurs to our felt board.

This is the perfect game to play as we are continuing to learn about addition!
Choose a domino and add the numbers on each side. Place it in the correct spot on the parking lot!
You can find this game below!

As we continue with addition, we will be focusing on rolling dice and adding that many animals to the zoo. Then students will learn how to create an addition sentence.

Going fishing is such a fun game! Use the magnetic fishing rod to catch 2 fish. Turn the numbers into an addition sentence and add them up!

We are ending the week with some Think Math problems! We will use manipulatives to solve these!

Find all of these lessons/activities in my Addition in Kindergarten Pack!

We will be focusing on using tweezers to pick up pom poms and cover the dots on the letter cards with our fine motor group!
